JET SET EXPERIENCES: Into Africa! UNPLUGGED vs. CONNECTED

Some of us want to be completely unplugged while in the bush, while others want—or need—to have WiFi access. Several camps don’t offer WiFi by design, yet a surprising amount of camps have service in the middle of the bush, albeit intermittent or at designated areas. We’ll give you the lowdown on powering up.

STAY CONNECTED
The aforementioned Singita Sasakwa features in-room phones, high-speed WiFi, air conditioning, and every modern comfort needed while on safari. And the Ol Malo Lodge in Kenya’s Northern Laikipia Province was another favorite. Owner-operated by the Francombe family, Andrew Francombe’s father was born and raised in Kenya. For 23 years he managed a 100,000-acre ranch before buying Ol Malo, which has uniquely designed rooms, pools, and activities for the entire family. The Francombe family passionately supports the Samburu tribe, be it schools, work, medical attention, and creating a beading workshop.

STAY UNPLUGGED
At the aforementioned Alex Walker’s Serian Camp in Kenya, the property decidedly keeps guests unplugged and in the present.

WOW FACTOR
Instagram envy is a given while on safari. But in addition to your iPhone, pack a real camera. And if not, several resorts offer cameras on loan and even tutorials from pros on how to frame The Big 5. And, don’t miss Ole Malo’s helicopter trips — the ultimate thrill in navigating Kenya’s landscape!

JET SET EXPERIENCES: Into Africa! ACTIVE PURSUITS

Game drives, though incredible, can also become incredibly sedentary. For those adventurers on the go, here’s how to break it up:

-Play tennis in the bush at Singita Sabora. Then shoot archery and visit an anti-poaching observation point with Singita Explore.

-Fly in an open cockpit biplane in Kenya. A former crop-dusting pilot, local aviator Will Craig takes two passengers over forests, herds of game, and ravines otherwise virtually inaccessible.

-Take a Wild Overnight Hiking Safari with Lewa Wilderness, with local Maasai moran as guides and camels as support.

– Mountain bike through the bush and move camp each night.

WOW FACTOR
Run with the Maasai Warriors. Upon request (and conditions allowing), run with Maasai warriors and local staff at Alex Walker’s Serian Camp in Kenya. With a support vehicle trailing for safety, pass hyena, elephant, and giraffe on foot—a serious adrenaline fix!
