Suggested Driving Excursions from Positano

Proceed along the Amalfi Drive — the cornice road following the rocky coastline of the highway. From the constantly changing landscape with its fantastic cliffs dropping sheer into the crystal clear waters below, to the deep gorges spanned by vertiginous bridges, this is an adventurous drive.

Amalfi was once a maritime rival of Genoa and Venice between the 9th and 11th centuries. However, in 1343 the town was destroyed by a tidal wave, never again to compete at sea except in the yearly regatta with Venice, Pisa, and Genoa. It is said that Amalfi’s Flavio Gioia invented the mariner’s compass here in the 11th century. Two sections of the original 12th century maritime republic’s arsenal can be seen on Via M. Camera near Piazza Gioia. Also of interest are an old Saracen Tower, a Capuchin Monastery, and the Green Grotto.

Sorrento

Located on a natural terrace overlooking the Bay of Naples, Sorrento is an enchanting city from where the Sirens attempted to lure Ulysses. Sorrento has developed a liveliness that attracts the tourists who formerly stayed in nearby Naples. Of particular interest are the Church of San Francesco, with a delightfully small cloister, and the Correale Museum.

Positano

A Mediterranean port and resort on the scenic highway from Sorrento to Amalfi. Surrounding the picturesque harbor are lovely villages and houses dotting the slopes like white cubes among terraced gardens facing the sea.

Ravello

The "Gateway to the East," is one of the most picturesque spots on the Gulf of Salerno. Covered with lush gardens of tropical vegetation, it clings to the steep slopes of the Dragon Hill affording bird's-eye views of Atrani, the coast and the sea.

Vietri sul Mare

A delightful beach resort with a tiny sand beach renowned for its ceramics.
